Numerial: A Chic, User-Friendly Hotel Amenity Design

Designer Hyo Jin Bae's Innovative Approach to Hotel Bathroom Amenities

Numerial, a hotel bathroom amenity design by Hyo Jin Bae, is an elegant and user-friendly solution for weary travelers. Inspired by the way-finding system of airports and subway stations, this design uses numerals as an international communication tool, guiding users through the sequential order of product use. The design is presented in a wooden box, adding a rich historical feel while maintaining its integrity and simplicity.

The inspiration behind Numerial came from the need to simplify the process of using hotel bathroom amenities for tired business travelers. The design is driven by numerals, a universal language that effortlessly guides users through the order of product use. The simplicity of the design, combined with the numeric typography and scent imagery, gives it a chic and elegant look. The amenities are presented in a wooden box, reminiscent of the hotel's history as a tea merchant, adding a rich historical feel to the design.

Numerial stands out for its unique properties. Each product has a distinctive form to avoid confusion, and the numeric order reduces the effort required to understand product information. The packaging for the shampoo is made of plastic-coated paper to prevent leakage, while the body scrub is wrapped in a designed cover paper with wrapping paper inside to prevent staining. The body lotion is packaged in a small container jar. All three products are elegantly packaged inside a designed wooden box, from which they can be picked out like tea from a tea box.

The design process for Numerial involved extensive research and interviews with hotel visitors to understand their needs and preferences. The design had to cater to a wide range of users, from business travelers to non-business travelers aged over 25. The research also delved into the heritage of the hotel to aid the visual outcome of the design. The project was started in Melbourne, Australia, and took four weeks to complete.

One of the main challenges in the design process was using numbers to guide consumer interaction with the products. This required a deep understanding of the hotel visitors' emotional and physical statuses and the process and order of consumption. The design had to meet the needs of many different types of people to make this primary design feature work. Despite these challenges, Numerial was successful in creating a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing design for hotel bathroom amenities.

Numerial's innovative design has earned it recognition in the design industry. It was awarded Silver in the A' Packaging Design Award in 2017, a prestigious award given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This award is a testament to the design's strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and the positive feelings it evokes in users.

Numerial is a testament to Hyo Jin Bae's innovative approach to design. By combining functionality with aesthetics, Bae has created a product that not only meets the needs of hotel visitors but also enhances their experience. With its chic design and user-friendly features, Numerial is set to redefine the way hotel bathroom amenities are designed and used.
